I approached the organizers of the Michigan Glass Project to propose a collaborative community mosaic mural—an opportunity to deepen the spirit of participation during the event by bridging techniques and mediums within the glass and street art communities. The goal was to amplify collaboration, foster creative exchange, and highlight the power of working together through a context-responsive, event-aligned public artwork.
The design centered around three core values that reflect the mission of the Michigan Glass Project: generosity, transformation, and regeneration. Symbolism was key: the central gear—representing community—features cogs that lock together, with the Detroit skyline incorporated into the main cog. A flameworking torch and spray can reach across the surface of the city, honoring the event’s roots in glass and street art.
Thanks to major support from glass manufacturers, glass artists both in attendance and those who mailed in work, and the dedication of volunteers, the mosaic came together over just three days during the music and art festival. After the festival concluded, a core team filled in missing areas and prepared the piece for installation. Three months later, it was installed during the Murals in Islandview Festival by a team of over a dozen local volunteers and artists—plus one mosaic artist who happened to be in Detroit for another event. The mural was installed over a painted backdrop led by an MGP organizer and fellow muralist.
Community members stopped by throughout the process, expressing gratitude and curiosity. I’m most proud of how this project united people across backgrounds, disciplines, and geography to share passion, build creative momentum, and leave something lasting for the community.
