As I have explored various materials in creating mosaics, I am continually drawn to Scottish slate. Each piece of slate is beautiful and unique, and there is a sense of discovery every time I begin to break a segment open. Within each section are treasures – varied lines and colors of blues, grays and browns, bright streaks of rust and perfectly formed pyrite crystals. The mosaic, Hidden, was designed first with the desire to highlight the beauty of the slate. As I created the circle, framed by the crossing lines, a parallel was made for me between what is hidden deep in a piece of slate, and within an individual. Just like a section of slate, there is beauty and unique qualities hidden within each person, that are waiting to be discovered.
