Materials matter: they are why I mosaic.  The find (often salvaged), the “playing” with materials before design and execution, and conversations that develop around work are all important aspects of my process.  Materials have a voice: always strong, but sometimes loud and shiny, sometimes soft and understated.  Often strength is in using one material alone, without the distraction of other materials.   The exploration of materials and how they work alone or, occasionally together with other materials, to create either harmony or disparity is what fires me.  Materials always dictate design; never the other way around.  Design develops from the important “play time” in the studio.
